Diseases Rodents Carry

Diseases Rodents Carry

Rodents are nothing short of a disaster. But rodents to entirely consist of rats and mice. There are man species in the wild that don’t bother with humans, glad to hear that. But that definitely doesn’t change the fact that the rodents that infest into our houses are nothing but nuisances.

Apart from the physical damage they cause, rodents are too dangerous just to let them scurry around. The health hazard is much greater, and some diseases are even fatal. You can get infected with rat disease from their urine and dropping you’ll find all over the house in a generous amount. Bites, scratches, saliva or even nesting material. If they have helped themselves to your water-works, you are done for.

Hantavirus

Hantavirus is potentially life-threatening. And to top it all off, there is no specific treatment or cure for the disease. And it’s spread from the most disgusting of places. When particles from rat dropping, urine and nesting materials dry out and go airborne. You are basically inhaling rat poop and urine to get sick. Just the thought of it, gross.

If a person is indeed infected they will have high-fever, feel fatigue, muscle ache (commonly in the hips, back, and thighs). The victim might even get diarrhea, abdominal pain and feel nauseous.

Salmonella

Another one of our disease friends from rodent feces. And this one is even more revolting. Salmonella is an organism living inside an animal’s intestines. Don’t worry it doesn’t come out through feces. But guess what it lays its eggs in the feces, of all place. Notably, the most common way humans are affected is through contaminated water or food. But that’s not all, these yet to be also born like the idea of going airborne to get in our bodies from the breathing system. As if infesting our house wasn’t enough.

People who are infected seem to get chills, high fever, stomach cramps, nausea and diarrhea (not deadly).

Rat bite fever

Yeah, there is such a thing, interesting isn’t it? Just like the name says, the bite is dangerous. Although there are cases of it transferring just because people handled rats or even rat contaminated food. You will experience skin rashes, fever, headaches, and muscle pain.

Leptospirosis

Now to take infection methods to the max, leptospirosis can be transferred just by coming in CONTACT with rat contaminated water. Unbelievable isn’t it. But the main methods remain urine, poop, and saliva. Victims have been reported to have a high fever, headache, chills, vomiting, red eyes, and pain in parts of the body.

Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus (LCMV)

Long name huh. Regardless, the most common host of this is more common, the house rat. Now that is what I call compatibility. Mind you this disease is unlike the other and more dangerous. The method of being infected is the same, rat poop, urine, saliva or nesting material.

It has two stages of infection. The first is like the previous ones, nausea, headache, muscle pain and lack of appetite. The second stage, however, gets really serious. Meningitis, encephalitis, or meningoencephalitis. You don’t want these!
